Please join Mr. Cass and Coronado Unified School District in congratulating Ellen Cody as this year’s recipient of the Greater San Diego Reading Association’s Literacy Award for 2016!
Each year CUSD participates in this unique award provided by the GSDRA, an affiliate of the California Reading Association and Honor Council of the International Literacy Association. GSDRA annually celebrates the endeavors of educators and community members who have made significant contributions in the areas of reading and language arts. Each district may select one individual who meets the criteria of excellence in teaching and promoting literacy; each year one team of educators from the county may also be recognized. Awardees are the guest of the association and be presented with a framed award at the annual “Celebration of Literacy Stars” event on April 23, 2016. Awardees are chosen from nominations submitted and selected by CUSD administrators.
Coronado Unified School District is proud to honor Ellen, Silver Strand Elementary School reading specialist, as our recipient of this year’s award. Ellen has worked as an exemplary teacher in our district for over fifteen years, distinguishing herself first for the quality of her language arts instruction in her elementary classrooms, and for the past nine years, as Strand’s Title I Reading Specialist. Ellen works with some of our most “at risk” readers, the vast majority of whom are military dependents who often come to us considerably behind expected reading benchmarks. In spite of those challenges, students under Ellen’s tutelage consistently and rapidly make up those literacy gaps. It is not unusual for her students to make two or three years of reading growth in a single school year. Through her expert, research-based instructional strategies, data-driven decision making, highly motivating teaching style, and exceptionally caring and compassionate manner, the children fortunate enough to have gained her guidance have consistently flourished. She is truly deserving of this award for her many years of dedicated and tremendous service that has touched thousands of young lives in countless ways.
CUSD is so proud of all teachers who tirelessly work to ensure all students are excellent readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers. CUSD values our partnership with GSDRA to honor teachers who promote literacy in our area.
Some past CUSD awardees are:
2015 Melisa Knepper CMS
2014 Linda Litrenta Silver Strand
2013 Tam Hoang CHS
2012 Robyn Fullmer Silver Strand
2010 4th Gr Team Village
