School Board Approves 2016-2017 Calendar; First Day of School is August 25th

After months of anticipation, the CUSD Governing Board approved next year’s school calendar, naming Thursday, August 25th as the starting date for all students. Teachers will report three days earlier in order to prepare for student arrival. Holidays and breaks remain relatively unchanged with the last day of school being set slightly later than usual at June 15th.

School calendars in California must be negotiated with the district’s collective bargaining group. The district leadership has had intense discussions for months with the Association of Coronado Teachers (ACT). While late in making a final decision, the outcome of that discussion was very fruitful for future calendar discussions.

The district and the ACT have agreed that the start of every school year will now be the last Thursday of August. Knowing this date will allow families to plan for summer vacations far in advance. Both sides also agreed that the last day of school will be one of the first three Thursdays in June.
