School Principals Hold Strategic "Cutting" Sessions Last Week to Give Community Members & Staff the Opportunity to Decide What Programs Go & What Programs Stay
Parents, students, and staff were strongly represented this week in three separate planning meetings. The principals from Village, Silver Strand, and Coronado High schools hosted a Strategic Planning Session in the CUSD District Office Board Room on January 14, 15, and 16. These meetings were intended to inform the school community on current budget conditions and allowed participants time to discuss the program and services they believe add the most value to the educative process.
Claudia Gallant, Senior Director of Learning & Instruction has moderated and organized the strategic planning sessions for several years, but has seen nothing like this. "It was agonizing to talk about how successful we have been growing these outstanding, high-achieving programs for children, and then turn right around and talk about ways to cut these same programs down."
These sessions were "hijacked" by the Superintendent in order to fully communicate the severity of this new budget crisis. After a presentation of budget issues facing CUSD by the Superintendent's Cabinet members, participants discussed in table teams their reactions, concerns, and priorities for all school programs. Because the sessions seemed more like deleting value rather than adding to existing programs, the sessions were nicknamed Strategic "Cutting" Sessions. Check the CUSD News Blog for a brief statement and images from each session.
Each Strategic "Cutting" Session focused on a different school site in the district. The sessions were tailored to discuss the needs and expectations of the school, but the five-year goals of the Governing Board were used as guidelines. One final Strategic "Cutting" Session will be held on January 23rd with a focus on Coronado Middle School.

This meeting was attended by over 75 concerned community members at the district office on December 12th. This meeting featured a full presentation of the budget problems facing our school district and questions from the participants. The last hour was spent on deeper questions and possible solutions brainstormed by all attendees. All school sessions were conducted in a similar manner.Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
