Value in School Districts using Social Media

Coronado Unified School District developed a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter in the fall of 2013. Since that time, social media has become a valuable tool for communicating with students, parents, and community members.
Why use Social Media?
Many school districts are tapping into the power that communicating through social media can provide. One of the key enhancements is the ability to communicate in real time. Our parents, students, staff and community are actively participating in Facebook, Twitter, and other online sites; we must deliver messages where our stakeholders are looking for information.
The National School Public Relations (NSPRA) states that if a school district develops a social media presence it will be better able to connect with parents and community members. NSPRA outlines the benefits of using social media as a communication tool:
- The parent and community audience uses social media to find information they value.
- Social media can assist in strategic and crisis messaging.
- School districts can increase transparency through the social media format which allows for quick and immediate information.
