Coronado Superintendent

Welcome Message

August 2020

Welcome, Coronado Families, Staff, Students, and Community Members!   Superintendent Mueller Quote

It is with a great deal of enthusiasm and pride that I begin my fifth year as Superintendent. I look forward to continuing partnering with our team of educators who inspire our learners by modeling curiosity, empathy, courage, and confidence. In CUSD, we are incredibly fortunate to collaborate alongside our dedicated classified colleagues who provide critical resources and perform essential tasks to ensure that our district and sites are operating with efficiency and support, including keeping our facilities safe and clean, our technology supported, and our students healthy.

In CUSD we believe that every child, every day needs a connection to something greater than oneself; this may be a club, a sport, a group of friends, an adult on campus, or a social cause. We also believe that every child, every day needs a challenge; this may be academic, personal, social, or thinking critically to improve the condition of self, community, or world. Finally, we understand that every child, every day needs a champion; this may be an adult who believes in and advocates for them, a friend, or a supportive community. When our students have a connection, a challenge, and a champion, they have the courage and confidence to reach their full potential with happiness and optimism.

I look forward to collaborating with our Governing Board, Staff, Parents, Community, and Students in modeling inquiry, humility, and pride. We will embrace the transitions facing public education and CUSD, regularly communicate updates on our long range planning goals, establish new and authentic relationships with all members of our unified community, celebrate the amazing district we share, and face all challenges—together.

On behalf of the entire CUSD family, welcome; we are excited to establish strong relationships with our new and returning students—thank you for entrusting them to us.

Karl Mueller

About the Superintendent

Karl Mueller was raised in San Diego County and has been an educator in California since 1997 as a teacher, director of a Charter School, and as an administrator for comprehensive public high school students. Karl graduated from Sonoma State University with a BA in History and earned his Masters Degree in Education from Point Loma Nazarene. Karl is married to his wife, Lia, and enjoys exploring the world with his two sons, William (15) and Finnegan (13).

Karl proudly served the staff and students of Coronado High School (CHS) as principal and ROP/CTE director from 2005-2013. At CHS, Karl was passionate about creating opportunities for his students to identify and select, with purpose, placements for '13th Grade' or life beyond the walls of 650 D Ave. He developed CTE Pathway courses, matriculated courses with local community colleges, and forged a 'guaranteed admission' compact with San Diego State University's Engineer Department. In addition, Karl focused on ensuring that each child felt valued and a sense of connectedness to the CHS community, programs, and staff.

Mr. Mueller began serving as principal at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) in the San Dieguito Union High School District in 2013. During his tenure at CCA, Karl supported a growing enrollment (from 1750 to 2500 students), facilitated engaging professional development experiences for staff in both CCSS and NGSS, developed a 'Raven Wellness' program and curricula that focus on the health and balance of all members of the CCA community, and established meaningful relationships with staff, parents, and students.

Karl returned to CUSD in 2016 and is currently serving his fifth year in the role of Superintendent.
